But when the song or audio is played forward it is all understandable and when it is played backwards, the relevant section is also understandable.ĭuring the 1980s a significant amount of fear which created a frenzy amongst the religious sects was initially due in part to the research started by Californian researcher in by the name of William Yarroll II. Now compare this to ‘Reverse Speech’ where there has been no manipulation of any type to the song or audio. When that particular section is played forward, it sounds like gibberish, but when it is played backwards, it is understandable. This strange new phenomenon is what the world now knows as ‘Reverse Speech’.īoth ‘Backward Masking’ and ‘Reverse Speech’ are what we refer to as ‘Backward Messages’ but the distinct difference is that, ‘Backward Masking’ is the manipulation of a song or any audio using a technical process, in order to implement a hidden message into that song or audio. Backward messages were being discovered which were not intentionally being put there. But then something strange started occurring. This started a trend amongst other bands who also started using backward masking techniques. ![]() This created wave of controversy certain sections of the public, but it also increased sales, as these same people went out to buy more of their records out of curiosity in what they would find next. ![]() During this time, the lead singer of the hit group ‘The Beatles’, John Lennon, started experimenting with backward masking by implementing hidden messages into their songs. ‘Backward Masking’ is a recording technique whereby you purposely insert a track backwards at the end of a song. Later on in the early 1960s a term called ‘Backward Masking’ was coined. What drove them to do that, I do not know. It wasn’t until 1961 with a song by Napoleon XIV called ‘They’re coming to take me away ha ha’ was the first documented case of any recording being purposely played backwards. The Germans used this device, amongst other things, to spread more propaganda. But around the time of World War 2 (1939 – 1945), the Germans created the ‘evolved’ tape recorder, using a magnetic strip for sound storage. The history of Reverse Speech has ‘arguably’ been traced back to Alexander Graham Bell’s 1886 patented non-magnetic, non-electric audio tape recorder, which primarily used a strip of paper covered in beeswax and paraffin to record the sounds.
